What are the most important films in the history of cinema? Most will name titles made by white, male, European or US-American directors. The West seems to be at the center of cinema, while works by non-Western filmmakers appear as an addition, „the rest“. In this class, we’ll challenge this history shaped by racism, imperialism and colonialism. Each session combines a screening of a non-Western film with a short textual input. Together, we’ll investigate different ways of questioning and overturning the status quo.
Elisa Mohr teaches film studies at FU Berlin, is involved in film festivals and works in film education for children. They’ve also worked on several fiction films in different roles. Elisa’s main interests lie in anti-colonial and queer cinema.
