📽️ Film History Marathon by Mark Wachholz / Wednesday 04.03., 18:30 – 23:00
PART I: FROM THE ORIGINS OF STORY TO THE DREAMS OF SILENT CINEMA
Embark on a journey back in time, tracing the misty origins of storytelling to the birth of cinema. Part I of filmArche’s annual movie history marathon takes you from the ancient tales spun by the first civilizations, through the mysteries of Greek theater, and the cultural marvels of the Renaissance, leading us to the moment when still images first burst into life at the turn of the last century.
With the discovery of cinematic language, silent cinema unveils itself as an almost forgotten realm of wonder, often ablaze with color, brimming with action heroines, tainted by racism, and surprisingly filled with sound-for silent cinema was never truly silent.
Dive into the diverse world of European cinema in the 1900s and 1910s, when attraction evolves into narrative.
Watch as a sleepy California town of orange groves morphs into the world’s largest movie industry in the 1920s, after Europe purged itself in World War I. While Hollywood delivers masterpiece after masterpiece, German, French, and Soviet filmmakers completely revolutionize the language of cinema – until it all comes crashing to a halt in a single day…

SCREENING AND Q&A
FURTHER AND FURTHER
Documentary, 80’’
Director: Tanya Chekhova
Dear Berlin Film-Community,
We are pleased to invite you to
a screening of Further and Further on Wednesday March 11 at 19:00, in filmArche’s Foyer. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with director Tanya Chekhova.
This light-hearted and dynamic road movie follows the journey of a renowned Russian physics professor in a final attempt to reunite with his family after its separation through Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Told through the lens of his granddaughter, the film documents the 94 year-old’s struggle to navigate between two polarized worlds: an authoritatian and disconnected Russia and his Western values, swinging between fatalism and optimism.
The film premiered at Berlin’s Doxumentale Film Festival in 2025.

PART II: DECODING THE GOLDEN AGE OF CINEMA
Enter the dazzling world of Hollywood’s Golden Age in the 1930s and 1940s.
With the rise of the talkies, film not only finds its voice, but also its rhythm and grandeur, transtorming into a sprawling industry teeming with luminous stars, riveting melodrama, and lavish spectacles that captivate millions with their glamorous, romanticized illusions. But not all is gold. We’ll examine the darker facets of the era: French cinema’s pessimistic tales of doom on the eve of war, the power of Nazi propaganda tilms that shaped German hearts and minds, and Hollywood’s exploration of its own psyche in the dark labyrinths of film noir…

PART III: THE RISE OF WORLD CINEMA AND THE SWELL OF NEW WAVES
In the transformative decades of the 1950s and 1960s, the tides of cinema begin to shift. Emerging film nations such as Japan, India, and Sweden leave indelible marks on the global stage, intertwining Western cinematic traditions with their own rich tapestries of storytelling.
Fueled by the dark echoes of World War II and the global liberation from colonial rule, this vibrant fusion generates a wealth of novel themes, worldviews, and cinematic realities that reflect humanity’s profound shift in consciousness.
Simultaneously, a dynamic cadre of young filmmakers and film enthusiasts defiantly rise against the encroaching monotony of formulaic cinema. Shattering established norms, they audaciously reinvent cinema, turning its own potent lens back onto itself. This spirited rebellion sends ripples across the globe, sparking waves of cinematic innovations— from the avant-garde fervor of the French Nouvelle Vague to the rejuvenation of a stagnant American cinema, culminating in an iconic explosion that heralds the dawn of New Hollywood.

PART IV: HIGH CONCEPT, MIND-BENDERS, AND THE FUTURE OF CINEMA
In the final act of filmArche’s movie history marathon, we bear witness the emergence of the high- concept blockbuster movie in the 1980s. This fresh cinematic formula simplifies the intricate narratives of prior decades, favoring potent, easily consumable storytelling, vibrant world-building, and condensed iconography.
Simultaneously, the boundaries between national cinemas and world cinema are dramatically dissolving, paving the way tor the interconnected landscape of today’s global media and popular culture.
As our journey draws to a close with the dawn of the new millennium, we grapple with the fragmented and labyrinthine nature of truth and reality as dissected in mind-bending independent films, each one seeking to unravel the enigmas of postmodernity in the 1990s.
Before the closing credits roll, we will also turn our gaze to the horizon, envisaging the possible future of cinema that has already begun to unfold today. With the advent of artificial intelligence and machine learning, we stand on the precipice of a new era. These formidable tools are set to revolutionize storytelling and filmmaking, offering, once again, innovative ways to navigate and comprehend the complex worlds we inhabit.
