This is an introductory workshop to method acting open for actors, non-actors and directors keen to explore and learn more about coaching actors. Participants learn how to deliver authentic performances in theater and film using tools and techniques derived from Method acting, the Meisner technique and Robert Cohenâs GOTE âGoal, Obstacle, Tactics and Expectationâ from his book Acting one.
During our sessions together we will work with characters and scenes to understand and orient ourselves with the toolbox for character and scene analysis. By the end of our time together you will be able to use âGoal, Obstacle, Tactics (aka action verbs) and Expectationâ to answer those questions:
- What is the scene about?
- Who are those characters?
- What does he/she want and why?
- How does she/he pursue that goal?
- What are the obstacles for her/him?
Participants will be assigned scenes and characters. We will explore the character profiles and history of the roles via hot seat exercises and improvisation. Each pair will explore their assigned scenes and learn how to identify scene objectives for each character, as well as the obstacles, tactics, and expectations. The instructor will also guide the process of dissecting the scene to understand subtexts and tactics and facilitate exercises that allow the scene characters to explore the history of their relationship in the scene, the power dynamics, and the different layers at work.
